NC - 5 speed vs 6 speed - 0-100kms (0-62)

Bonsoir,

As per Mazda Canada web site, 0-100Kms for the NC 6 speed is 7.5sec and 0-100kms for the NC 5 speed is 8.0sec.

Personnally, I'm very surprised by these numbers. First the 6 speed car is heavier and second, it needs an additional shift to reach 100kms.
Do you think it is a marketing tool?
Do you know if somebody did compare the acceleration of both cars?

I ask the question because I plan to buy a MX5 and now I'm not sure which one I should buy. In Canada the 6 speed comes only with the Bilstein, the LSD and the 17'(package cost:$3000) .
I do not really care about the 17' (in fact if the 16' are lighter, I think I would prefer these), now I do not care about the bilstein (as it seems they are softer than stock dampers), I would like LSD (thus I'm not ready to pay $3000 for it) but now if there is a .5sec difference...
If there is no significant difference in acceleration, I will go with the
5 speed but if the .5sec is true... Any comments??? Thanks...GUY.

Frankly, I imagine the numbers are accurate. I was obviously not there so I am speculating but I don't imagine they made up the numbers for marketing reasons. For all we know, the tests were done on different days, different drivers, different conditions, and may be totally meaningless.

On the other hand, we can imagine that the shorter ratios of the 6spd gets if off the line faster and if the driver speed shifts the triple syncro trans they can perhaps beat the slower ratio 5spd.

To add to Brian's comment, I've seen the same driver generate significantly different 0-60mph times depending on whether or not he got the launch just right.

Drive both and see how they feel. Even if those 0-100kph times were representative, what would be the difference if you measured 50-100 times, 30-100 times, etc? It may not be that much.

Sorry to bring this one back from the dead. My thoughts are that the better time is soley the result of the LSD. I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying that the 6-speed is closer ratio. If you look at the ratios, the 5-speed is actually a little closer between gears unless my math is wrong. 1st is a bit taller, however. I would think that all other things being equal, that the 5-speed would be better for auto-x.
