Hey, Brian - we were told the Cosworth barrel throttles wouldn't work without bodywork in the engine bay (making it an illegal mod for CSP)...whassup?? That looks like it fits just fine!Brian wrote:WARNING...AUTOMOTIVE PORNOGRAPHY below. IF you are under 18 or of delicate disposition click away now!
Here is what the F1 style Barrel Throttle looks like in the Cosworth catalog.
And here is our used Barrel Throttle off the dead 2.3 Formula Atlantic motor all cleaned up and installed on our 2.5. Can you say throttle response?
Motor mounts are an issue. Factory mounts for this motor do you no good at all and attempting to work with them leaves the motor too high, too far forward, canted a funny angle, etc, etc. Thankfully, Tony at AWR is a custom motor mount pro and makes all our upgraded NC mounts. Tony's custom mounts dropped the motor down and back...but even all the way back as you see in the second photo above you can't use the stock alternator location. This alternator is a super small race unit from Cosworth and it still hits the steering. So, alternator will move to the bottom of the passenger side of the motor (better for our weight distribution anyway).

Can't speak to that...this 2.5 liter on custom motor mounts doesn't tell us anything about fitment on the factory 2.0. The other issue is that the factory 2.0 is drive by wire throttle and these are old school cable throttle. We have a Motec to run this one.

I understand the implications of what I'm asking but... would Motec be a viable standalone unit for street use MX5’s with more than usual modifications. What I mean is, the information interface between OEM gauges and the Motec unit may not be possible but I’m sure there’s a solution. What about advanced systems like ABS or traction control? Are those systems compatible or lost because of the change.
Custom bracket by Tony to mount belt tensioner.
Big radiator, massive oil cooler! We cranked for oil pressure...and we got it. This is now a 6 liter oil capacity NC.
Rear RX8 brakes with two piece rotors and suspension (Speed Source sways) and axles are in. The brake rotors and axles are the only items actually new on this project, everything else from the motor to the Cosworth barrel throttle body, the chassis, the suspension, and transmission are all used and reconditioned items. Speaking of "used', that bloody finger is mine, no racecar is complete before it is properly baptized with a little blood.
The plan is to get on the dyno WEDNESDAY. SO, if we don't answer the phone Wednesday, it's because we are playing on the dyno. We have a ton of work into this thing, hope it actually makes power this week!

I hoped to get over 230. I was secretly wishing for 250. I didn't think we would do as well as we have here. Peak hp is actually a few points higher on this machine than our supercharged 2.0 (at least until we raise the redline on that one). Torque is still higher in our Cosworth Supercharged 2.0 at 215 ft/lbs with more area under the torque curve but this is really, really, good results and we don't have 30 pounds of extra stuff in the car.
Our goal was 300 crank horsepower and 2000 pounds....and it appears the power side of the plan is accomplished better than I hoped...right at about 300 crank hp. Hope to get on the scales soon and see what our weight is down to.
