Miata Water Pump

I have a 1994 Miata "R" that I have had since new. It only has 58,000 miles. I don't drive it much on the street anymore. It is mainly used for autocross in ES. Three years ago I had the water pump replaced (with one I bought from Mazdaspeed) by the Mazda dealer along with a new timing belt and front seals. Recently the water pump started to make a noise but wasn't leaking. In 3 years I had only driven it 3,000 miles. The dealer told me the warranty was for 12,000 miles or 12 months, so I had to pay for installation of a new water pump again! I have since read on the Internet (isn't everything on the Internet true?) that the quality of Mazda water pumps is not the same as it used to be, at least for NAs and NBs. Has anyone else had premature water pump failures? Is Mazda going cheap with replacement parts?
