Header heat

I was trying to figure out the best way to go about heat proofing a set of steel headers like the racing beat ones. i know the easiest thing would be to just get the track dog heat shield but does anyone have any personal experience with what worked best for you? I feel like getting thermal wrap and wrapping the whole header would be the best but I have read these wraps can damage the header over time or peel up and you have to redo the whole thing. I have also seem ceramic header paint in auto parts stores every now and then. Any input on ceramic coating a header yourself? Just looking for the most effective method from guys who have tried them all. Thanks

Indeed if you wrap the headers that voids the warranty with most header makers, because it traps moisture which can cause rapid degradation of the material, welds, etc. Wrapping headers is something that got handed down from drag racing but drag racers are okay rebuilding headers at the end of every season, so we generally don't recommend it. The blanket does much the same job but is open on the underside to avoid trapping moisture. You can also ceramic coat even stainless headers, our testing shows slight power improvement. Note you don't want to do both...the blanket would scratch up the ceramic coating.

Thanks Brian, don't want to ruin any headers with a wrap then i guess. out of the Track Dog or ceramic coating what would be your favored method?

We don't get any more power with the blanket....but we do get a few more points of torque with the ceramic. Thus, I go with the slight gain in power. But lots of folks make the other decision since the cost of doing just one header in ceramic properly can be quite a bit more than the blanket.
