CEL P2096 w/Goodwin Catted Header/MP/Q

Hoping for some help with this from the mazdatalk forum crew. I am getting this code from my car right now. Car has 17K miles. No tune. Had the header for about 3K-4K. I have reviewed these threads:

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=498839
http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=500148

Meaning of the code: Fuel trim is too lean after the first converter. My nose agrees, smells a tad burnt, certainly not rich.

Steps I've taken: Inspected the o2 sensors, cleaned the MAF with CRC MAF cleaner.
The code came back shortly after cleaning. Probably exactly when I got to closed loop. I'm leaning towards professional help but I'm sure the dealer will blame Brian's exhaust/cat. I think that's unlikely the problem.

Questions:
  1. Any one else have this problem besides me?
  2. Any thoughts on a fix? Do I need an o2 sensor or two?
  3. If I can't get this resolved before this weekend, would I be safe in driving 400 miles round trip in the vehicle to Portland and back from Seattle?

My first thought is try a fresh first sensor, we have seen plenty fail.

My second thought is talk with one of the tuners like Mike at MotoEast because they have seen it all with regards to first sensor and cars not trimming as they should.

Thanks Brian, I'll try that. I was reading from this:
http://www.obd-codes.com/p2096
Which would indicate the post catalyst sensor is reading lean, though I suppose it could be dependent on the first. Do you have a recommendation for the model of o2 sensor to use, given the header etc? Or just go online to any dealer and buy the part and install?

We have only used the MAZDA OEM sensor so I don't have experience from which to recommend any other. The first sensor is the wideband and most responsible for the fuel trims. So, first sensor not working right can lean it out too much.

I thought I'd check back in to share what happened here. I suspect other members will experience this code, and the consequent hassle associated with trying to track it down. Here's what happened with me:

The dealer never mentioned my mods. They reflashed the PCM. This seems to have fixed the problem, but I consider it kind of weird. I suspect there is an updated version of the stock tune that manages this code more effectively than the original (which may mean that it won't be needed for cars newer than mine). I also think there is likely an unmentioned TSB on this for US cars. In this thread (http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.ph ... 148&page=2), the UK version of the TSB is shown.

BTW, based on what I learned, those who have had their cars tuned (unlike me) will likely never see this code.

If it is the first oxygen sensor, then you will see codes like this return in a few months. I had similar code problems with my 2009 when I put in a full PPE header, mid pipe & muffler, which got worse over the next 6 months. Replaced the first sensor with a Mazda unit and no problems for several years now. Oh, I had a MotoEast tune, too.
