NC/RX8 muffler interchange?

Post by Chuck H »

Brian, probably a stupid question, but have you ever tried any of the dual muffler RX8 exhausts (Racing Beat, Greddy, Magnaflow) to see whether the tips and hangers line up for an NC MX5? Even if it doesn't quite line up with the midpipe flange, it might be easy to adapt if the rest fits.

Sorry, never tried it. Don't currently have any RX8 mufflers around....but my recollection is that the RX8 muffler is even more massive, bigger and heavier than the stock MX5 muffler because the rotary motor makes crazy sound levels. Thus, can't imagine it would work out as a good choice for MX5 (a muffler that bigger and heavier than stock MX5 is not a request we get).

I was hoping you had an aftermarket muffler at the shop. Thanks for replying so quickly, though.

If it was close to fitting, it seemed like this one:

would be a cheap substitute for the insanely expensive AutoExe one, and the back half of this one:

is the Enthuza dual setup, for all practical purposes. It uses the same mufflers and everything.

Sorry, don't have the space to keep any massive RX8 mufflers around the shop.

My hat is off to you for the creative thinking aspect of this idea but my recollection is that the Racing Beat muffler combo is even heavier than the massive stock RX8 muffler and I doubt the results are much different with the Magnaflow. I will ask our friends at Racing Beat to remind me the weight on that muffler (I think it was around 45 or 48 pounds but I will check).

why not just get the enthuza duals? twin canisters, and you know it will fit. it just might not be as shiny as the others, which can be fixed with a little elbow grease.

Yeah, I still may end up doing that. Unfortunately, Christmas cleaned me out, so I'm a couple of months away from doing the muffler, which means I'll second guess myself about 10,000 more times between now and then!

I also heard back from someone that the RX8 tips are MUCH further apart -- like 16 inches wider than the MX5. No way a little bit of tweaking is going to make up that much difference!

I don't know why I keep making this so difficult on myself. I should just buy the RS-Q and be done with it. Haven't heard a single bad thing about it, and it even looks like a piece of artwork.
