We ran the Hooiser 225/40/17 on 17x9 our ND for the big Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca weekend last month. I wanted something that would have no issues with clearance even in the extreme suspension compression of the Corkscrew and this tire worked out great. But tell you what, on Friday before the event I ran my street tires, Rival S in 215/45/16 on 16x8 and it was just three tenths of a second slower per lap...for a LOT less money! The new kings of the 200 treadwear class (Rival S and RE71R) are almost Hoosier fast and about half the price.

I was running 225 45 17 conti take off slicks on stock 17 x 7 and since they are heat cycled out I am considering all options on current wheels vs stepping up to 17 x 9's.

$536 for 4 215 45 17 RE71r
$712 for 4 215 45 17 NT01
$1100 + for 4 225 40 17 Hoosier R7

or new 17 x 9 wheels $900 + cost of tires

Seems like I could be happy with the cheapest option.

That 200 treadwear 215 45 17 RE71r would work well on stock rim.

Just know the FUN in those sticky tires might be about 10k miles...fast wear is the price of soft/fast.

I have Hankook RS3s in a 215/45 on stock 17x7s. I absolutely love them. Comfortable enough for daily use, yet very capable on the track. I don't know if it has to do more with the tire or the size, or both, but I think that setup is just about perfect.

I've run the 215/45/17 RE-71 Bridgestones all season on the stock 17 x 7 rims (2013 Miata club PRHT) in C/Street and worked very well as a dedicated autocross tire. As a daily driver, it is not very comfy! But what fun when asking the car to perform! Ran a couple extra pounds of air pressure to make up for the relatively narrow rim. Now have these same tires on 17 x 8 tungsten 6ULs and have a set of Michelins Pilot Super Sports on the stock rims now and those are a really nice 3 season tire, good for long trips but still with impressive grip and a 300 tread rating.
