235/40-17 tire suggestions

Post by DarrellM081 »

I'm researching before I spend, and it seems that 235/40-17 on 17x8 is the way to go. I live in sunny El Paso, TX and am trying to decide what tire would be a good for spirited DD. The selection seems very limited. I typically prefer A/S, but am figuring I can get away with summer rubber here, since we see very little snow. I've seen S.drive, Nankang NS-20, Falken Azenis FK453, Federal SS595, and some Xexen/Roadway/Somesuch N7000 available...just not sure where to start.

All input is appreciated!

Brian, that looks seXXXy! The only thing that concerns me with those tires is the perceived tread life. Forgot to mention I typically log ~20k miles per year. My ride is a 2014, with almost 80k on the clock.

Yep, most of the 235/40 choices are fun Summer Tires....and Summer fun doesn't last forever. 20k is about the limit you would get on those, as little as 10k if you drive them hard enough.

Re: 235/40-17 Dunlop ZIII

Brian etal... I currently have a set of Dunlop ZIIs in 235/40/17 near the end of their useful life. I really like them, but they have been phased out and have been replaced by the new ZIII. Has anyone actually mounted a set of these yet, preferably on a Miata, and if so, what are your impressions. I'm also awaiting the upcoming GRM tire test in their June issue to get their feedback.

Had a brief drive on street with customer car, felt good....but not the same as autocross/track opportunity to really push on them. Nonetheless, first taste was good and I think the III is a promising fresh choice in this size.

I made the jump to Michelin Pilot Super Sports, (235/17) on Enkie 17x8 wheels for the street. LOVE 'EM!!! Even drove in slushy ice/snow once - and they never failed to perform. I guess it was around 35°. I used tthe MPSS on the track once too - not as good as my RE-71R's, but I hear the MPSS heat cycle better and definitely last longer.

I was looking for 235/40 17 Michelan Pilot Sports and could not find that size on tire rack.com. Where did you get them? Are you sure they are not 235/45s ?

Note Dunlop now has updated 235/40/17. Good price, good tire.

This has been an on going thorn in my side as well. I currently have 225/45-17 on my 17x8 wheels.

While they offer an improved ride they lose a lot of that crisp turn in that you love. My tire of choice is the Michelin Pilot A/S-3plus having used the A/S-3 previously on in the stock size with the OEM wheels.

I like the added mileage, year round use, and added rain traction they offer along with decent tread life and warranty.

I asked the Michelin rep. about offering the 235/40-17 size in the future but it didn't seem to generate much interest as they claim that their will not be enough sales in that size due to no car coming that way from the factory
