What do the SuperPro Differential Center Support Bushings do for the car?

With the mileage of 126k we expect the already old and brittle and cracked OEM bushings to start falling to pieces once we up the torque they are trying to resist with the 2.5 addition. Also, we have found that when we seriously up the torque with either boost or 2.5 the life of the transmission is longer if we don't let that stronger power twist and whiplash the trans and diff on the comparatively weak factory engine and diff mounts. To put that another way, by going to new strong engine and diff mounts front and rear we limit the twist of the trans housing by the additional engine torque and that helps the transmission last a lot longer.

On the other hand, given the modest 2.5 liter power goals (not 300 hp like our Supercharged 2007), we don't need the 80 durometer version, will use our 70 durometer in this car. Reason is limit the gear noise transfer into the car. Everything is a question of balance and avoiding overkill, we think the 70 duro version is the right call for this project. And if I was picking just one of these upgrades, the motor mounts above are the most important, assuming stock diff bushings not already in failure mode.

With the $5k limit, it appears a brake caliper upgrade is off the list, so are you utilizing your high performance street brake kit?

Are you shooting for the Helmholtz Race muffler to be very similar to the ND one already developed, or working for a little more sound suppression?

That's right, likely with really good brake ducts and high temp pads for track days. Perhaps still do the caliper upgrade for stock size rotors once we have seen what we can accomplish with the current budget.

Starting with current Race JIG, adding Helmholtz. Given that current JIG has fiberglass resonator, that means result here will actually end up more like ND SuperStreet. Just did 50+ miles of coastal fun driving on it, super mild results. The big helmholtz chamber knocks out over 40db of 120-130 hertz range (the drone) and with the fiberglass editing some high frequencies the result is medium tone and super mild. Will play with it again, got other versions to play with. CAUTION, don't get too attached to ANY prototype bits we show here! Letting you guys in on the fun side of development, most companies NEVER do this, one reason is that folks get too attached to prototype bits that may never reach production. So, we want to include you all in the fun development process, just don't get too attached to any fun bits we play with here, this is just the start of the journey.

Stock muffler, not news that it is massive and heavy at over 25 pounds, just putting it on this scale for the comparison using same scale. Prototype at 13 pounds. Got other versions to play with, particularly once we get header on here. Before that happens, baseline dyno session coming soon!

NC really doesn't need a brake caliper/rotor upgrade (unless you're doing crazy power upgrades like turbo/supercharger). Just upgrade the pads and you're good to go. I've found PowerStop TrackDay pads to work well for heavy track use (including at Road America). Bonus is the brake dust rinses off the wheels.

Different usage of the term baseline I know, but the build is shaping up much like the wiki post I linked...

In fact, I'm thinking this build is now the craft-beer equivalent

Like the muffler prototype! At first I was thinking that the HH resonator should be transverse, like on the ND mufflers, but then I realized it would probably need another set of hangers on the other side if you did that, which adds unnecessary complexity and cost. Can't wait to see the final design. I'll probably be retiring my custom Enthuza dual in favor of this one to un-drone my car!

Brian wrote:So, we have our five thousand dollar Miata. Drove it a ton yesterday, even on date night with the wife last night to Dinner with friends, super impressed with how much Miata we got for 5k, the early NC is an amazing amount of fun for the money! Now the next challenge is can we get this totally stock 5k NC Miata to TOP TIME OF DAY at a local event with just 5K in parts?

Here is the starting thoughts on the parts list:

2.5 Motor New? Quickly obvious a new motor kills the idea of getting the build done for 5k, but a used motor is just a few hundred bucks from local yards. Starting thoughts on rest of the build list is below:

Hypergram 17x9. Effective, light, great price.
MotoEast E85 Tune
Progress Sways. Super effective for the money though we will develop RoadsterSport Sways on this car which will have lower rates and lower costs.
RoadsterSport Race Springs (to be developed on this car) 400 lb/275 rates.
KONI SPORT shocks.
Bumpstops
RoadsterSport Competition Motor Mounts (keeps 2.5 from destroying transmission fast with too much twist).
Triple Pass Radiator
NC Aluminum Coolant Expansion Tank (I lost a 2.5 motor in Project Blue before we did this, cheap insurance!).
RoadsterSport MAX Power 1.8 Inch Header - Ceramic Coated (the number 1 choice in 2.5 application headers).
RoadsterSport HighFlow Stainless MX5 Miata Midpipe with HighFlow Converter (our lowest cost converter midpipe with good 2.5 inches of flow).
RoadsterSport new Helmholtz Muffler (to be developed on this project), price goal not known yet.
Offset Bushings (much more ideal camber numbers).
SuperPro Differential Center Support Bushing Kit - 70 Durometer
Noticed that the MAX midpipe didn't make the list. Is that still in the works, or did it not make the final cut for 2019 development projects?

List is far from complete, just starting it....and indeed will be working on MaxMidpipe for NC too, including CARB version as we have done for NA and NB.

Our 2006 Project to the shop today to start updates and fixing deferred maintenance we commonly see on these older NC. While it was bone stock our crew took turns taking it around local freeway fun ramps to get the feeling again of a stock NC with worn out shocks, etc. We all agreed it is fun but sloppy, shocks worn out, lots of slop in the suspension action.

Up on the lift and factory endlinks are trashed, shock boots and bumpstops are pretty much gone too. Adding our KONI Sport shocks today and our prototype RoadsterSport Sways for NC generation. These sways are a step down in rates and costs from our amazing Progress Sways, will use this new NC project for the next stage of testing of these. Working on RoadsterSport 400/275 rate springs, taking measurements today with suspension bits all removed and will use our Progress Springs on the KONI shocks with our short bumpstop kit until the prototype set of RoadsterSport springs arrives. Result by end of today will be MUCH more fun and less sloppy feeling than how the car drove in here.

Team all agrees the motor feels particularly strong for an NC with this sort of mileage, booked dyno session for Saturday morning to measure how many horses have escaped over 12 years since it left the factory.
