Hi Brian,

I hope you can advice me. Firstly, I would like to ask which official setup is considered factory spec for MX5 NC ? Understand the stock model is 205/50 R16 and the higher end model is 205/45 R17. Am I right to say that based on http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html , mazda upgrade the higher equipped MX5 with 17inch is already slightly off from stock 205/50 R16 ( 0.8% off).

My question is, when we want to upgrade rims, do we take the 16inch factory rim as a base reference or the 17inch factory rim as base reference ? Unless mazda individually calibrate the different trim mx5 odometer using different size tyres (16in and 17inch), using 17inch (205/45 R17) to start off as a based to calculate to upgrade tyres or rims will result in further error taking into account the already 0.8% difference from original 16inch to 17inch .

Anyway, I am running on stock 16inch and would love to have after market 17inch or 18inch. My main concern is NOT to have the tyres scrubbing inner side of the car when doing full lock to lock turns, what do u recommend ? I read offset 48mm seems to be best, so will a 225/40 R18 rub ? Mazda recommend only 205 for 16inch, 17inch and even 18inch (which leads me to think anything wider will rub) but its hard to find 205/45/ R17, 205/40 R18. what is common are 215/45 R17 but then again 215/45 R17 is a wrong upsize from stock 16inch based on the tyre calculator which will caused Odometer error. Tyre caluclator recommends not more at +/- 2.5% deviation from stock rims so as not to affect odometer and gearing

Hope u can advice me

I have always considered the 17 inch combo the standard setup simply because that is the one I see the most. But Mazda does not calibrate separately for 16 and 17. The 225/35/18 combo is a good stock diameter match and would work well on a 48mm choice, the 225/40/18 is too tall and may rub.

Hi Brian,

Really appreicate your fast response. Unfortunately the size u recommended is not available. Here are the list that is available, appreciate you can recommend the closest to my stock 16 inch.

http://www.goodyear.com.sg/catalog_sg/t ... Eagle%20F1

Tyre upsize chart : http://www.goodyear.com.sg/tyre_school/tyre_plus.html

For 17inch (offset 48 ) - ?? 215/45/R17 ? 205/45/R17 ?

For 18 inch (offset 48 ?) - ??

Thanks a zillion

By the way, say i stick to stock tyres 205/45 R17, what is the best offset to use ? 48 ? I know stock is +55 which is not easy to find from after market rims. Can i stick to the owner's manual alignment specification if i use a 48 offset on 205/45/R17 or 215/45/R17 ?

The stock tires, 16 and 17 are .02% different in revs per mile. 860 vs. 862 revs per mile. The speedos have some error/calibration problems built in. They are not certified instruments.

225/35/18 is available from Toyo, Falken, and Hankook. That 215/45/17 is just a touch tall but that too works pretty well in our experience.

Hi,

You mean there is some kind of error calibration built in in the speedo ? So what will be the threshold ?
