6UL - Tungsten with 17x9 with 235s or 17x8 with 225s?

Any input would be helpful, specifically:

- Will 17x9, 235s be too big, stick out, look wrong.
- Should i consider smaller wheel size for the front and larger for the back.
- Advantages/disadvantages of either config.

I have a standard MX5 RF GT configuration with MotoEast Reflash and exhaust upgrade planned over the next few months. I would like to have all season performance tires, not racing slicks, etc. Not racing this car (technically...ha!) but want more traction that the bicycle tires i have now...

My wife's RF is 235/40 on 17x8, pic below. Doing same 235/40 on 17x9 will square up the tire a lot more, far more firm performance. Using an all season might even look a little stretched on 17x9, more so with 225 choice. So, if really doing all season on 17x9, I would pick the 235/40.

Note all over the site we usually suggest 17x9 is a race fitment, for those racing the weekends at SCCA events, the track, etc. We don't recommend 17x9 for street, so that's not a size we ever suggest an all season choice on, assume it may look stretched a bit even with 235/40. All season tires tend to run a little under the listed size, ultra high performance tires tend to spill quite a bit wider than the listed size. I have a 225/40 Hoosier race tire here that looks near half an inch wider than 235/40 street tires. So, the point to understand is the more aggressive tire in 235/40 will better fill out that 17x9.

Brian,

Thank you an gorgeous looking RF! I was actually thinking about the 45's as there seem to be more options in tires. Plus, Chicago potholes are notorious for banging up rims. If i went with the 17x8, 225/45s, or 17x9 234/45s would i have an issues with the tires not fitting? I have not done any suspension mods, etc and don't plan to.

Thank you.

Christoph

I've decided to go with the 17x8 6UL Charcoal. Any suggestions on tires? All season and summer suggestions are welcome. Also, looks like you upgraded the exhaust? If you did, what did you go with? Thank you. Christoph

Lots of all season choices in 225/45, not aware of any in 235/40. I remain a big fan of 235/40 in Toyo R1R that is on my wife's car.

As for exhaust, with supercharger she needs our max flow WITH max sound control. That means our header version SuperQ and MaxMidpipe. The supercharger makes everything louder, it's like blower harder on a whistle, it gets louder.

Those of us who get to drive in below freezing temperatures definitely lose some options in the cold season. Best reviewed of current all seasons I've found is Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ which comes in 225/45. Any feedback on these, or other 225/45 all season choices on Miatas?

Hi Guys
I will not be of any use to either of you Gents on all seasons, living here in Sunny San Diego we just don't face that need, Summer Tires all year here.

Ok, just ordered the 17x8s (in charcoal). So are 235/45's (all seasons) going to work on the 17x8 rims????

Also, still waiting on new EcuTek programming from Moto-East Tuning. Been a week, any suggestions?

Thanks - Christoph

Hi Guys

I like the Federals, good value.

235/45 is too tall....go 235/40 or 225/45
