Wheels for turbo 1.6

Post by danwink »

Hi Brian!!

I am looking to add some wheels to my Begi series 3 on my 1991 Mariner. The car is making 250 RWHP and I use the car both for street and track. I would like to keep my options open for larger brakes in the future, however I am also sensitive to weight.

Can you give me some opinions on what you recommend?

(The car has Tein Flex)

At least a 15x7 which would allow you to run such sizes as 225/45 and 225/50. Our 15x7.5s would be better....and best for those sizes would be our ATS comp 15x8 for better sidewall support.

In 16s we have the 16x8 RP-F1 which would let you run as much as a 245/35/16 street tire....or for track use a Avon 225/40/16 R compound on the same rim.

I am a bit frightened of going to a 16 from a weight perspective. How much more than stock daisy wheels would that wheel tire combo weigh?

There is a choice to make here between weight and tread width. You have to ask how much width you really need. Some of our turbo customer owners will deliberately stay narrow on their tires so they can throw the back around at will...and others wants much stick as they can get on.

Your factory daisy wheels are 12 pounds each. Certainly some combos of our 15x7s matched for street use with a light TOYO T1R in 205 or 215 could result in a combo of about the same weight of about 30 pounds a corner (or less with the RP-F1). When we jump to 16s you get the potential to run even more tire (proper diameter street tires of as much as 245 wide) but that comes with some weight penalty. But if you are adding our big brake kit you will end up with unsprung weight similar to where you have now.
