Do you recommend that the bar can be installed by the end user, or is it more tricky than a regular handy guy can do?

It is not so tricky. Pretty easy. Time consuming and it really helps to have a buddy handy to help lift the bar into and out of the car (to measure twice and cut once). But nothing tough about the install and YES it can be done in the average garage by anybody decent with tools on a weekend afternoon.
