As a new mx-5 owner (2008 Touring), I have a question that's probably been asked many times before but I 'd appreciate your feedback. What's the widest tires that I can install on my 17" rims without making any modifications to the wheel or fender flares?

For the factory 17x7 rim I would not go beyond 215/45/17. You could go wider but it will get progressively more and more sloppy feeling unless you also go wider with the rim.
