Installation instructions for the GWR 2006-2015 MX-5 Hood Lift Kit

Tools Required:
Ratchet
10mm Socket
12mm Socket

1) Open the hood of your MX-5 and use the factory hood prop to support the hood. Remove the 6mm bolt located on the fender in the image below.

2) Install the lower bracket using the include hardware (bolt and washer) with the long end of the bracket pointed towards the front of the car. Torque to 7-12ft/lbs. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the opposite side of the car.

3) Next, remove the top 8mm bolt that attaches the hinge to the hood.

4) Install the upper bracket using the factory 8mm bolt as shown below and torque to 15-20ft/lbs. While tightening the bolt, hold the bracket in place so it stays centered on the top stud.

5)Begin by pressing the hood strut to the lower bracket and ensure the retaining ring snaps onto the ball.

6)Press the other end of the strut to the upper bracket and ensure the retaining ring snaps onto the ball. You may need to lift the hood off the hood prop in order to attach the strut. Repeat steps 3-6 for the opposite side.

Before closing your hood completely, verify there is adequate clearance for hood struts and brackets. Please note that on our Project Blue, used for demonstration purposes, the fender bracers prevent the hood from closing with the hood lift kit.

Hey Brian,

Just got this hood lift kit, which is awesome. Although, I couldn't help notice during the installation that it seems I received the same bracket twice. As you can see in the pic, the top bracket (that attaches to the hood) is the same; both for the left/driver side. The bottom brackets (that attach to the fender) are fine, but it looks like I'll need the top bracket for the right/passenger side. I can send back the duplicate bracket if needed; it's still in perfect condition since I haven't installed it. Otherwise, the kit is good!

Thanks!

Just installed my hood lift kit. Noticed that when closed the hood near where the lift is mounted is a bit higher (from the fender) than the rest of the hood. Also, is there any danger of going over a bump and having the hood open or is the latch strong enough to prevent this from happening ? Ths struts are pretty strong, any way to loosen them up a bit?

Has anyone ever tried to modify this kit for use on the trunk lid?
Or is there an upgrade kit for the trunk? Google search only gives me OEM replacement alternatives.

I have added a Lexan spoiler that adds just enough weight that any gust of wind will slam the trunk lid shut. Recently this cracked the Lexan at the center support, a $150 mistake that I don't care to repeat again

Search by length and then look for higher ratings for pressure/weight.
