Ryan's #13 1990 Track Miata

Post by Ryan @ GWR »

Hey guys! If you call or email in to Good-Win Racing, you might speak with me. So I think it’s about time that I did a quick intro here and get a thread about my own car off to a start so that everyone can follow along with me moving forward.

I’ve been playing with these roadsters for nearly a decade, and my first one is still with me though the evolution has been pretty dramatic.

Here she is years ago, one of my favorite pictures from a day carving through the back-roads. I stopped in the middle of the road for the picture because I was the only one around for miles:

When I caught the racing bug, I purchased another miata - this one a 1999 - to use as my street car to ease my reservations about taking the 1990 down the rabbit hole of becoming a track car.

This is how she looks today, this from the 2014 Time Attack finals:

A brief run-down on the current specs look like this:
2,000 lbs flat with fluids and all the aero additions (without driver)
215 horsepower at the wheels via a turbo on the 1.6L motor
Racing suspension and Brakes
15x9" wheels with street tires & 15x10" wheels with race tires
Cage inside with all the necessary safety equipment
You can probably tell from pictures that my personal fascination and passion is in the aerodynamics category, and this car is my test-bed for many ideas, so this car has an ever-evolving aero package that is fairly comprehensive with many additions front, rear, under the car, and above with a flat bottom, wing, and much more.

YES it is still a street car (sort of). Driven to each event:

I’m a fabricator, driver, and tinkerer - nearly all the work done on this car is by my own hands. Everything on the car is version 3 or 4 (or 5 or 6…) so follow along with me as I’ll keep this area updated with progress on the car, and feel free to ask me any questions you have.

Another season of racing is beginning, and I have some big plans for the car this year that will tie in with developments at Good-Win Racing so stay tuned!

Whatever your goals with your own car, likely I’ve been there too, and I drive my 1999 to work most days because I enjoy these cars in every form from street to race, so don’t worry - if you tell me yours is a street car, I’m not rolling my eyes, I get it and I’m right there with you!

Added a superlite hardtop to the car.

Previous top was a carbon/fiberglass unit, that came in at ~25 lbs.

This one is a dry carbon "skin" with no internal structure. After I fabricated brackets to hold it in place, added seals and gaskets and a rear window, this new one is 8.5 lbs. Lighter is faster!

Can't beat camping and waking up track-side in the middle of the desert to a sunrise like this:

The record for the fastest Miata around here is a 1:56.3 done with 400 hp and very sticky Hoosiers. I was very pleased to set a new personal record of 1:58.6, and that at the hottest time of the day. Only 2.3 seconds off from the record! That's a solid gap, and I'm always working on shaving more and more of that down.

The Good-Win Racing crew will be back to Chuckwalla in a few weeks and I'm very excited to see how much closer I can get.

Good catch!
Actually I'm changing the layout of all my sponsors logos on the car so currently most of the logos are removed. You can be sure though that Good-Win Racing logos are going on with the new layout :D

Took the car out to the Roadster Cup and Redline Time Attack competitions out in the desert at one of our favorite tracks, Chuckwalla Valley Raceway.

Sean and I co-drove the car Saturday at the Roadster Cup event which is a Miata-specific series. We had a great time meeting fellow enthusiasts, giving out GWR swag, and just enjoying the track. Took home a 1st place in Modified and set the fastest time of the competition:

On Sunday we put some Hoosiers on the car to compete in the Unlimited rear-wheel drive category for Redline Time Attack. This is a competition among any car make/model that fits into the class.

Came away with a first place and fastest Unlimited class time!

Car has been down for a bit while we focus on getting acquainted with and developing things for the new 2016 MX5.

Still, have had the fun of playing with various things on the car lately. Here's a rare shot of it up on the lift which shows some of the aero work on the underside of the car:
NA on the lift.JPG
Just for fun, we test-fit the new 4x100 17x9 6UL wheels for the ND on this car. Before anyone asks, not planning to run these wheels normally, this is just to see how they fit since some customers will inevitably ask:

And a sneak-peak at something else soon to come: in the never-ending development of aero on this car, a new bigger and badder wing has just arrived which will be replacing the one currently on the car. This is a dry carbon, super lightweight wing with a more aggressive profile and substantially wider than the current wing:

I so want your under carriage panel-work on my car. But first I have to raise mine back up. the previous owner went basement level with the Tokico lowing kit. Just let me know if that proto-type ever needs to come to the east coast for hiding.
