Having to recycle the key frequently but not with the same frequency to get starter to engage, e.g. sometimes starts first turn, other times might take 6-8 or more cycles of the key.

Thinking ignition switch is culprit; starter seems o.k.

Any thoughts?

Yep, could be either one but my guess is the ignition.
