OFFROAD WEEKEND FUN!

While we wait to go lower with prototype Koni shocks we hope to see at some point this year we figured we would enjoy the lifted life and do an off road day with friends. Our Lariat (non-FX4) had stock clearance of about 8 inches that we made 9 inches. That's good but well less than our Jeep and Bronco friends had this weekend. We did get the Maverick stuck in a mud bog once and needed our extraction ramps to drive it out but overall it did amazingly well. There were plenty of berms to cross where we had one corner of the Maverick high in the air and yet it kept going without much drama.

Dirty and muddy Maverick

One low point to using the Maverick off the road is the charcoal filter location is dead center and relatively low and vulnerable under the Maverick. In a more 'serious' offroad design it would be packaged by the front wheels or rear gas tank so you cannot high side and break it. On the platform under the Maverick/Escape/Bronco Sport it is dead center. That's a really bad spot. Since we did not order a Tremor or FX4 trim we didn't get extra panel to help protect this spot, might need to make our own.
Found one from a rolled Bronco Sport on Ebay for $100 and fixed it easily enough. My searching found threads about one guy with Bronco Sport that broke his Charcoal canister several times. There was talk he was unlucky, but the real issue is terrible location for such a vulnerable item. Took me about 10 minutes to replace it, some of those Bronco Sport threads included notes about the dealers charging a grand and that seems a bit out of line. Picture above of the cracked one I pulled, and below after replacement.
