ND2 RF Top End Power

Post by RiyazM309 »

Hello! I'm new to Miatas, and new to a n/a platform. Love my Miata, it's great fun when pushing it but I feel like I'm missing a top end punch. Mid range torque is great and around town is quite peppy. But when I'm really winding it out, between 6-7.5K, there isn't much of a pull. It just feels flat to me. What can I do to reliably get that top end pull without sacrificing the character of the car? I'm not chasing numbers whatsoever. I don't care what numbers the car makes, just how it feels. I want to be rewarded at the top end.

So far, from what I've seen about ND2, headers don't do as much as they do for ND1 motors. Besides a tune and an axleback, how can I achieve what I'm looking for? I would appreciate the guidance. Thanks!

You get a bit with headers and full exhaust but indeed not much extra top end punch short of doing HKS Supercharger, which is a BIG mod.

Any long tube options for ND2 in the cards? I think I saw there used to be a long tube option for the ND1 but it's not available

Long tube went out of production. Cost got crazy, several thousand per unit.

So no revelations here, you heard from Brian and he's got all the answers. I will say that after I installed the CatBack SuperStreet Single Tip Exhaust from Good-Win, I got a very small but noticeable change in the top end, but mostly a better throttle response at low RPM. It just seemed to open up the throttle response in general to me. I remember the stock exhaust can just seemed to give me slightly more of a sluggish pedal feel with a slower initial rev and some rev hang off throttle. The new can gave me a faster rev off the line and less hang. The upper end was just just a bit better, but if you drive them back to back like I did, it was noticeable. No numbers, just seat of the pants feel for me, but I could tell there was maybe an extra 5hp in there at the top. Nothing to wow you, just an extra touch you didn't have before.
Brian probably has the numbers dynoed by now. It could be in my head, but it felt like a different driving car to me. The car already breathed pretty well as stock. The sound with the new can if anything is glorious, so I can't recommend the exhaust more and I've listened to many of them. Your only options to make it better than that is a supercharger.
